The following article, which is written in Zatsu Gaku Nippon
(Japan Trivia) published by Kodansha, seems to explain this matter well.
We would like to introduce it for the foreigners’ convenience.
Q: Why is Japan called both Nihon or Nippon in Japanese ?
A: In old histories from China and Korea, Japan is referred to
by the character 倭、 which is read wa in Japanese.
Later 倭 was replaced by the homophonous和、
and the character大（big）was prefixed to it to give 大和、
which is pronounced Yamato.
The people of Yamato adopted the characters日本, literally “sun origin”
for the name of their country because Yamato was referred to
as the “Land of the rising sun” in the seventh centry
Chinese travel report Zuisho Wakokuden.
The name was chosen because Japan was in the direction of
the sunrise as viewed from China and Koria.
In the Man’yosyuu and other early poetry collections,
the phrase Hi no moto, which also means ”origin of the sun”
was used as a conventional term for Yamato, and Taiho Code
adopted in the early eighth century required that the Japanese emperor
be called by a title that included the characters 日本
became the name of Japan.
In the Nara period, the characters were still read as Yamato or Hinomoto.
As more people became literate, the pronunciation Nihomu

いわれ［意味］：旧暦（きゅうれき）では
初秋・中秋・晩秋のなかの最後のつき。
太陽暦（たいようれき）では8月15日が初秋
9月15日（今年は14日が満月）が中秋
意味は夜が段々長くなる。
昔、奇数（きすう）は縁起（えんぎ）の良い数字とされていた。
重陽の節句： 季節は菊の真盛（まっさか）り、
各所で菊が奉納（ほうのう）された。
この日、宮中（きゅうちゅう）では、菊花の宴（えん）が行なわれ、
長寿（ちょうじゅ）、延命（えんめい）を祈願（きがん）した。
前夜から菊の花の上に綿をかぶせておき、その香りと露（つゆ）を
含（ふく）んだ綿で肌（はだ）を拭（ぬぐ）ったりした。
それは「着せ綿」といわれていた。新暦でも9月9日にお祝をする。
